Welcome to Neuroscience for Psychotherapists

Dear friends,

I'm writing to invite you to my online course entitled Neuroscience for Psychotherapists: A Practical Training on How to Strengthen Your Client's Neural Platform of Resilience and Well-Being.

That's a big topic! However, it's true: the research discoveries of modern neuroscience are showing us the most effective tools and techinques to reverse the impacts of stress, trauma, anxiety, and depression on our clients' brians.

You can help clients strengthen their capacities to rewire patterns of neural circuitry. You can help them develop a trustworthy competence in healing so that they can bring deeper awareness, empathy, resonance, and connections with others into their lives.

My program is based on over 20 years of teaching this material. I've created an eight-week curriculum for you that is comprehensive, yet very clear and accessible so that you can come away with practical strategies for your sessions and practice.

Here is an overview of what we'll be exploring together:

  1. Why neuroplasticity is important and how we can foster its transformative potential in our sessions with clients
  2. How to use the basic mechanisms of brain change to recover any derailed development of the client’s brain and deepen their somatic, emotional, relational, and reflective intelligence
  3. How to nurture the physical brain and lead clients through a trajectory of healing into resilience and post-traumatic growth

I never cease to be amazed at what is possible in terms of helping clients heal so they can thrive and flourish.

I look forward to sharing this learning journey with you.

Linda Graham, MFT

P.S. Offered through Sounds True, this course comes with a one-year guarantee so you can try it risk-free. You can also apply for up to 10 Continuing Education credits upon completion.

Neuroscience for Psychotherapists:

A Practical Training on How to Strengthen Your Client’s Neural Platform of Resilience and Well-Being

Linda Graham, MFT

Eight Weekly Training Modules Plus Two Q&A Sessions

This professional training will be taught by Linda Graham, MFT, covering the latest research and clinical training in the emerging fields of applied neuroscience and self-directed neuroplasticity. Linda is the author of the acclaimed Bouncing Back: Rewiring Your Brain for Maximum Resilience and Well-Being.

While many therapists have heard about the revolution that has taken place in neuroscience and how it is impacting the clinical practice of psychotherapy, most are unsure where to start. Not being trained as neuroscientists, many of us are a bit wary about the brain and its relevance in helping clients who are suffering and in search of more adaptive ways of living.

Linda will provide the theory and clinical tools that you need to start applying the revolutionary discoveries in the fields of neuroscience and neuroplasticity in your work with clients. She removes the veil and takes therapists of all levels and orientations into the essential theory and application which is most relevant in helping our clients in very practical ways.

Through both didactic and skills-based training, together we will look at:

  • Understanding the nature of working with conditioning and reforming neural pathways
  • Encoding new neural circuitry
  • The role of the therapeutic relationship in rewiring the brain
  • The application of body-based and somatic tools and practices
  • Regulating the nervous system and the fight-flight-freeze response
  • Cultivating positive emotions and the revolutionary practice of mindful self-compassion
  • The cultivation of both interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence
  • The practice of mindfulness and its ability to rewire the brain
  • How to practically help your clients to learn to take care of their brains and nervous systems

In addition, Linda will be sharing with you useful skill training that includes somatic tools to recover a baseline physiological equilibrium; self-compassion practices that mitigate the harshness of the inner critic to deepen self-acceptance and promote resilience; memory deconsolidation-reconsolidation techniques to rewire traumatic memories and heal toxic shame; mindfulness practices such as reflective awareness to foster wise decision-making; the cultivation of positive emotions that antidote the brain’s negativity bias; the implementation of skills of relational intelligence to create healthier, more empathic relationships; and more.

What's Inside Your Curriculum

Session #1: Why It's Essential to Help Clients Harness Their Own Neuroplasticity

In this session we’ll look at how to teach your clients more about their own brain and how to use it for positive change.

Topics we will explore include:

  • Evolution of the human brain: an overview of the primary structures and their roles, drawing on 25 years of modern neuroscience discoveries
  • Relationships, empathy kindling, and shaping maturation of the brain
  • Neuroplasticity: experience-dependent capacities of the brain to grow and change over the course of a lifetime
  • The mechanisms of neuroplasticity underlying all therapeutic modalities to create new neural pathways and patterns of response to life events
  • Practices to skillfully accelerate brain change

Session #2: Conditions in the Therapeutic Relationship That Support Neuroplasticity

In this session we'll look at how early experiences and technology influence neuroplasticity.

Topics we will explore include:

  • How early attachment and caregiving experiences develop or derail functioning of the prefrontal cortex
  • Relationship of attachment styles to mental health or psychopathology
  • The therapist as reattachment figure underlying all therapeutic modalities
  • Impact of digital technology on attachment, relationships, and brain functioning
  • Applications to strengthen intelligences: somatic, emotional, relational, reflective

Session #3: Somatic Intelligence: Accessing Body Wisdom to Rewire the Brain

In this session we'll look at how to use the wisdom of the body to work with the brain.

Topics we will explore include:

  • Body-based tools to regulate the nervous system and automatic survival responses
  • How to manage surges of emotions such as shame, anger, fear, anxiety, sadness, or depression
  • How to use the brain's neurotransmitters to return the body to baseline equilibrium
  • Reversing the impact of stress and trauma
  • How to prime the brain's plasticity and receptivity to learning

Session #4: Emotional Intelligence: Neuroscience Is Revolutionizing Our Thinking About Feelings

In this session we'll look at how to work with others to build more emotional intelligence.

Topics we will explore include:

  • How to strengthen the client's capacities of attunement and empathy to manage anger, anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, guilt, and shame
  • Learning tools for mindful self-compassion to shift the functioning of the brain
  • How to cultivate positive emotions including gratitude, kindness, serenity, love, delight, and awe
  • Shifting the brain's innate negativity bias
  • How to shift the functioning of the brain to a larger perspective to provide more options for coping
